| Roy Lichtenstein's Artwork: |

For this project we were focusing on non-traditional materials and when I had thought of using sprinkles for my project I was greatly inspired by Roy Lichtenstein and all of his dotwork in his pop art. When looking at his artwork I noticed that each color had its own direction in the pattern of where the dots were going. I took this into account when doing my piece because I really liked how in his art, instead of it looking like one print with a simple design of dots going in the same direction and spaced out the same, the way he choose to do it adds character and a unique value to his pieces. When I did this project my work was greatly inspired by modern day contemporary artist Clet Abraham. He is known for “hacking” road signs all over europe and adding his own twist to them. When doing his project and taking an approach at appropriation, I was greatly inspired by the fact that Clet doesn't completely deface the sign and cause a disturbance. The art is subtle in its own way and when I did my art I also wanted to take an everyday object and change it slightly.I chose to take the “Fire lane” text on the street and change it to “Louis Lane”. Looking back on both pieces I feel that I learned to make art more of my own. With my sprinkle art, the art being made is an exact picture of Roy Lichtenstein and I was inspired by the look of artwork. Whereas later when I did my appropriation project I was inspired by the idea of an artist and was able to build on top of that.

for the piece that I am most inspired by and enjoy the most, I choose this piece by Francisco de Goya. I really like the unfinished look of the piece . Even though it is "unfinished" it still feels complete. The information told me that by doing it in this style he was trying to show almost his attention to detail in certain spots and then move onto the next piece. for the images that I really didn't like, it would have to be this piece. When I saw this piece I just really didn't like it. I thought the proportions were wired and the facial expressions really bothered me. I felt like it can't even be taken as cartoony. This piece was just very unsettling to me. When I first saw this piece I honestly thought this guy was wearing a space suit and had knives in him. I then had walked past it without thinking about it. Then when I was walking through again I read the plaque thing and was really interested. I read that this was commemorating his accomplishments as an African American pilot. I thought that was really interesting and I'm glad I went back to go look at it
For my non-traditional material I used confetti sprinkles. When I was choosing my project I originally saw the picture that I was going to use of the crying women, but didn't know what I wanted to make it out of. I had seen the picture before and seen the pop art style before and really wanted to use that type of art for my project. I found the right size sprinkles later and choose to start the project. I first glued the background paper in its correct sections so that the color would be able to be seen through the sprinkles. The project is unfinished because it takes a lot of time to get the small parts in. For the hair it gets very small and I have to cut the sprinkles to the right size to fit. I also have to make sure that it ends up ones together correctly and no spaces. The process of glueing down the sprinkles I have to use tweezers to grab the sprinkle and place it correctly because the sprinkle, especially when it's cut, can get very small. The sprinkles isn't the hardest material I have worked with but its just very time consuming and fragile. Before starting I had to sort all the sprinkles to make sure I had enough and make the process generally go faster. While cutting the sprinkles I usually just wanted to make one cut to get two pieces. But, the sprinkles are fragile enough that sometimes cutting it makes the sprinkle completely shatter. I was really unsure about how this was going to turn out but I'm happy with it and I will finish it in the near future.
I chose appropriation as my postmodern principle, which uses pre-existing images but with a little bit of change. The art to me is almost a parody of the original and that's what I focused on for my project. For my project I was walking outside and saw the labels for "No Parking" and "Fire Lane". In the moment I changed "Fire Lane" to the only thing I could think of at the time, Louis Lane. Then when I was deciding what to do, I played around with this idea and tried to find for words, but ended up really liking Louis Lane. I wanted my final product to look like the text style of the other words, but that made me nervous that maybe it was illegal since it could throw off where to go in an emergency. To do this, I knew I needed something that would 100% come off, so I decided to use chalk. When I found out chalk paint was a thing, I used it to better get the effect of a painted look for my project. I started by making stencils from the previous words and making them the same size, so it would look as close to the real thing as possible. When I finished with the text I really wanted the project to be more distinct, so I decided to add a superman logo. Using stencils, I painted the logo right next to the words. I really like how this project turned out. I also like the fact that it was my first idea and came so quickly to me which I ended up using. I also noticed how postmodern principles can mix with each other, I could have gone with text part as my project, but I think that adding the superman logo made it appropriation.
I agree very much with this article, but I think it applies to the artist. For me, I do not enjoy painting and I often think of any other materials to use besides paint. Finding non tradition materials available at construction stores have always appealed to me and I find it more creative. But to the people who enjoy painting, I could see that art stores with more traditional mediums would be semifinal. I see how great prices of artwork can be made with "not great" materials, but the quality of the art supplies available at the art stores can be beneficial. I agree with the article in the fact that art is not defined by the simple known materials. Great works can be made with the unknown, unusual, and unused materials. In today's day and age I find creativity and originality very hard to find because so many different ideas have been done. When artists take something normal but use an interesting material to make it different, I am always impressed. This is shown in these pictures where the artist made these giant fish sculptures out of plastic bottles. The use of light, size, color, materials, etc. make this piece very beautiful. For this artwork I really like the shades of color and the result of how the grass pieces turned out. It showed that shades and values can be reached even with non-traditional materials. I agree with what she is saying for the most part. I think that it is fine to introduce these ideas when the children are younger. Having these principles introduced throughout an elementary school class would provide the basic knowledge for future art students. When kids get older they understand these principles, but often these principles mix with each other and it's hard to focus your art on one specific principle. I think creating art should be about creating something you think is creative and passionate about. It's good to have focus and direction, but often the meaning gets lost when students are assigned something specific. Post-modern principles - appropriation
My question was, can something create when it's purpose is to destroy? I centered this project around using erasers to actually create an image rather than doing it's opposite purpose, to destroy. I then choose my picture as fire. Fire can have positive qualifications. In the environment, sometimes people create forest fires to clear the forest floor and make new nutrients for the environment. There are a lot of things that have negative stigmas but their results can create. I used this machine thing that was able to erase the charcoal to almost white and then using other types of erasers to get different shades and create a type of blending.
I believe that art doesn't have to have meaning. I also don't think it's up to the teacher/viewer to determine if there is or isn't meaning. Even if you ask someone if there is meaning there could be some underlying meaning that they might not want to share and reject the idea that there is meaning. Decoration isn't a bad thing either. You might create something because you like the material. People create their style using the same material but once they have multiple random objects with that material it might not mean anything to them. It might be the material. But you still created something from you and that should be enough for the art to then become meaningful to you. The element I choose was value. I think my piece focuses more on value rather than form, because with stippling, you focus more on your lights and darks to create the art, rather than focusing on things like depth. I choose to do stippling with pen and ink because the project was suggested to do in a comfortable medium, rather than trying something new. I have done a couple different stippling in the past but for this project I had better materials that made my project better than my past work. For this project I experimented on changing pen sizes and experimented with the smallest size. I love working with stippling and even my favorite artist focuses on pointillism, so I really gravitate towards that style. I stayed in my comfort zone a little more with this piece because I feel that i am still learning the techniques of stippling. I choose to do a Popsicle because it has some nice simple shapes that provide simpler transitions of value. I would like to choose a more complicated piece in the future with stippling.
Which project was your most successful? Describe the theme and or topic and the process you went through to complete the project. I would say my free project was my most successful project and the one that I was overall the most happy with. This project worked in the way that I could picture what I wanted and how I wanted it to turn out, and it actually did turned out how I imagined it. With other projects I felt I didn't have a clear direction and was unsure if I liked what i was doing, or it became very complicated in the process and I didn't like where it was going. The theme of the project was to use free items and when aluminium foil was mentioned, I knew I wanted to use it and take advantage of it’s color and shininess. When I knew I wanted to make use of these two factors i thought of a shark because I wanted to work with the “grey” color. When designing the project I referenced a lot of anatomy designs of sharks but I kind of mixed multiple diagrams together to get the shark I wanted and would be most recognizable to others. Then I knew I didn't want the straight on approach that the diagrams showed. I was creating a 3D model and wanted to take advantage of that, so I decided to bend the shark in a direction. I didn’t realize the significance until the critique when someone wrote that the shape added movement to the sculpture and I completely agreed. Most things came together when I was going through the project. The body is made out of newspaper and tape and that worked pretty well to create the initial shape. Then I covered that with aluminium foil and started to add the fins with hot glue. The hardest part to work with would probably be the teeth because it took a lot of time to get the small pieces to stay and not fall out. Overall, I really liked how this project turned out and am happy with the final product. Do over: If given the opportunity, which project would you do over? Describe why and how you would redo this project. Reasons might include choosing a different theme, using a different medium or creating a different idea completely. Include photo.
What did you find most difficult about this class? This could be anything from gathering materials, to generating projects ideas, to applying a particular technique. What could be done to resolve this issue in the future?I found that with this class there was a lot more freedom. This freedom wasn't necessarily a bad thing, I just had trouble focusing my art in a direction. There wasn't generally a theme that I had to work with, so the possibilities were endless and I had trouble sorting through them to get the best possible idea I wanted. To resolve this in the future, I think I could possibly make up my own general theme for me, and then work with that and specify an idea. This way I could still challenge myself, but get a unique idea. I think I could also work on researching more on the different way materials work. I had an idea from doing the pinterest board, but maybe research more into it, to better understand what I was working with and what was going to come out. Medium: which medium did you most enjoy working with and why? Which medium did you not use but wish you had explored? Include photo.
Has your definition of art changed since from the beginning of this class?Generally I am a very realistic artist, and don't like to really push things out of the box. I feel like sculpture pushed my out of my regular painting to understand shapes more. With sculpture it creates a lot more time and effort to think of all angles that someone is going to be viewing something at. This happened with my shark piece because there is many angles that It could be viewed at because it is a 3D model. When I thought of sculpture, I just thought of clay. I realized that clay is actually very complicated to work with and can really provide you with anything. Generally people work with clay but I like restrictions and the challenge of working with other materials. This class made me realize that you could use anything to create sculpture and art. I think my favorite project was the free project because everyone thought of so many cool ideas and I was amazed at all the things you could create with everyday objects. It was definitely different from my normal paint and 2D form. This class has taught me to definitely explore new mediums no matter what type of art I am doing, and that really anything can be considered art.
